Christmas 2003
Buying the Tree
Assembling the Tree

22 Nov 2003

Kathryn and I have always had a special tradition around buying the tree.  It has marked the beginning of the Christmas season for us since we first started living together.  In '97 we went with Tracy and cut our own in the Sanat Cruz mountains.  In '98 things were a bit busier :-) so we bought one at the Home Depot.  '99 was another trip to the Depot.  In 2000, we went to a local lot on Grant Rd., an experience I resisted but eventually loved.  The Grant Rd. lot became our standard, and we returned there each year.

Well, that was then....  This year we're in Singapore, and live Christmas trees are about as common as ice skating rinks here.  Some freinds were kind enough to loan us their artificial tree this year, so we've set it up in the living room.  We jumped the gun a bit (we set up a bit earlier than usual), but we decided that we're in serious need of some Christmas spirit this year.  It's kind of strange to celebrate Christmas in a country where only 25% of the population is Christian.  "Christmas" here equates to a large stuffed Santa, and there is very little in the way of Nativity scenes, etc.  Oh well- I guess that's just our opportunity to do a bit more on our own.

(Tragically, I can't find a picure from this year.  We may not have bought a tree, as we spent Christmas at Nana and Papa's house.)
