Thailand Vacation

July 2003

OK, I'm way behind.  here are some shots from a fantastic 4 day trip to Thailand

After 2 hours in the plane, the girls were a bit frightened by our "greeter".
They eventually warmed up to him, though.  (see below)
Months later, McKenna still calls out for "Pokey El-phant"

There's not a lot to do in Phuket in July.  The surf is dangerous, so you can't go for a swim in the ocean.
With SARS having just blown over, there weren't many people travelling.  I think our hotel was only about
15% occupied (no kidding!)

Then again, the goal was to spend time as a family.  We did lots of swimming in a fabulous pool,
which was the main feature of the Laguna Beach Resort where we stayed.  Zoe loved the water
slide, and practially wore out the mats testing it out.     McKenna was a bit too young to go down
by herself, but she had plenty of volunteers to carry her any time she wanted to go for a ride.

We did manage to drag ourselves back onto dry land occasionally.  During one rainstorm, Zoe made herself a batik pillow.  Nana made a pillow too (which she later hauled home - including the filler! :-)

We did a little bit of shopping.  There is a Jim Thompson store that was a quick ferry ride from the resort.  Mostly, though, we hung out and relaxed.

Thailand is known as the "Land of 1000 Smiles".  It's true- people smile at you everywhere.  And apparently it worked on our happy travellers too.

One evening we went off to a traditional Thai banquet.  There were a total of 12 people in a hall menat for about 200.  Still, we got to see a beautiful series of traditional Thai dances.  The costumes were absolutely amazing!  The girls were amazed (for as long as they could stay awake.)

As usual, everyone there was fascinated by the girls.  Two of the dancers wanted to take them home- despite the fact that neither of them seemed to speak any English.
